The foundation of the oldest part of Reichenstein dates back to the early 11th century. The outer part of the castle now houses a hotel and a few restaurants.

Reichenstein

Reichenstein was originally owned by a series of robber knights, the first being Gerhard of Rheinbodo. He terrorized the region until he was killed in 1213. Other robber knights continued to pillage the area.

Reichenstein

The castle was destroyed in 1253 by the archbishop of Mainz. It was rebuilt under Phillip von Hohenfels.

Reichenstein

Dietrich von Hohenfels and his nine sons continued to steal from merchants passing through the area until they were killed by Rudolf von Habsburg, when he seized the castle in 1282, and buried in the nearby St. Clement Chapel. The ghost of Dietrich von Hohenfels supposedly haunts the castle as a headless ghost. Habsburg destroyed Burg Reichenstein in 1290.

Reichenstein

General Baron Franz Wilhelm von Barfuss bought Reichenstein during the 19th century and began restoration. He named the castle Falkenburg after the falcons that would build their nests in the towers.

Reichenstein

Nicolaus Kirsch-Puricelli obtained Burg Reichenstein in 1899.

Reichenstein

Kirsch-Puricelli collected many hunting artifacts and trophies from around the world.
