Linderhof
Schloss Linderhof (Linderhof Palace) is one of the castles designed by King Ludwig II and the only one that was finished while he was still alive. It is located in Bavaria near Oberammergau and Ettal. These photos were taken in June 2007:

The cascade leading to Neptunbrunnen (Neptune Fountain) falls down around thirty marble steps. A Musikpavillon (Music Pavillion) lies at the beginning of the cascade.

Ludwig's (Venusgrotte) Venus Grotto was created in 1876-1877 and was modelled after the Tannhäuser opera by Richard Wagner. It is the site of the first electricity in Bavaria. The electricity was used to power the lights around the stage and the fountain. It uses 24 dynamos in a machine house located about 100 meters (328 feet) away from the grotto. The stage is about 21 meters (70 feet) tall and 91 meters (300 feet) long.

Ludwig II was crowned king in 1864. He began to create ideas for the construction of Linderhof in 1868.

Schloss Linderhof was inspired by King Louis XIV (The Sun Kings's) Versailles Palace.

The gardens of Linderhof Palace cover an area of about 125 acres.

The Ostparterre (East Parterre) contains a gilt sculpture of "Amor shooting an arrow," sculptures of "Venus and Adonis," and a bust of King Louis XVI.

When visiting this castle, be prepared for a lot of walking.

The garden designer for Linderhof was Carl von Effner. He lived from 1831-1884 and was appointed by King Maximillian II, the father of Ludwig II. He received his personal title of Court Garden Director by King Ludwig II in 1877.

The Wasserparterre (Water Parterre) has a fountain with a gilt sculpture of "Flora and puttos" and has the ability to rise around 72 feet (22 meters) into the air.

Pictures of the interior of the palace are available on the official website.

The Westparterre (Western Parterre) was the first garden and was completed in 1872. Within the garden lies the gilt figures of "Fama" and "Amor with Dolphins," and a bust sculpture of King Louis XIV.
