  • Be sure not to confuse to verbs wohnen and leben. Wohnen means 'to reside,' while leben means 'to live, exist.'
  • Ich wohne in Deutschland.- I live in Germany.
  • Er wohnt in Frankreich.- He lives in France.
  • Wir wohnen in Amerika.- We live in America.

Ich komme aus...
A great phrase to ask where someone comes from is 'Woher kommen Sie.' It means 'Where do you come from.' The verb 'kommen' means 'to come.' Another way to say this phrase is 'Wo kommen Sie her.'
  • Woher kommen Sie?- Where do you come from? (formal)
  • Ich komme aus China.- I come from China.
  • Woher kommst du?- Where do you come from? (informal)
  • Er kommt aus Dänemark.- He comes from Denmark.
  • Wir kommen aus die Niederlande.- We come from the Netherlands.
  • Ihr kommt aus Irland.- You all come from Ireland.

Ich bin nicht...
To make a verb negative, add the word nicht directly after the verb.
  • Ich komme nicht aus die Schweiz.- I do not come from Switzerland.
  • Wir sind nicht zweiundzwanzig Jahre alt.- We are not 22 years old.
  • Sie heißt nicht Sophia.- She is not called Sophia.
  • Du bist nicht Österreicher.- You are not Austrian.
